In this storied 1929 Art Deco building, we were tasked with transforming a stately and formal traditional duplex into a refined minimalist haven. Walls were stripped down and moldings demolished to make way for a space reminiscent of a gallery, meditative and reduced to convey the message of simplicity. Modular and moveable, the renovation of this palatial New York apartment was carefully considered and slowly accomplished over nine summers to showcase works by John Chamberlain, Damien Hirst, and Richard Serra. The juxtaposition of this apartment sans ornamentation in a 1920s Rosario Candela building quietly works to calm the senses and relax the mind.
