Mid-Century Modern

An incredible opportunity came our way courtesy of the late interior designer John Barman, who had kindly introduced us to the clients after he saw the Colonial Revival house we had renovated on Hook Pond in East Hampton. The clients wanted a mid-century modern house, and we shared their passion for this era’s architecture and design.

This truly remarkable oceanfront site in Bridgehampton, New York, not only had sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean to the south but also overlooked beautiful wetlands and Sagg Pond to the northeast. To address these views, the house was elevated, with the principal rooms, along with the swimming pool and pergola terrace, on the upper floor, and the children’s and guest bedrooms on the lower level.

The North side of the house, with its Utah limestone piers and chimneys and mahogany-clad walls. The carport with its deep cantilevers was a specific request of the client.

The stair’s concrete treads are supported by blackened-steel beams. The mahogany sliding doors were inspired by Rudolph Schindler’s King Road house.
